The first stage of training, conducted through the summer, is the Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) class. This class is a hybrid format that covers first aid and rescue techniques. The online portion begins in July and ends once the in-person class begins in September. The classes are held on Sundays from 4-8pm and conclude with a final exam administered just prior to the hill opening in November. After completion of the OEC course, the candidate is considered a “Ski Patroller”.

After OEC training is complete and the ski area is open, you will be scheduled to provide services for a minimum of one shift per week. That shift and your schedule will be discussed with the Patrol Representative and mutually agreed upon. It is not always possible to get the exact day and shift you would like but our goal is to make things work best for you and the Patrol.

As a “Ski Patroller”, you are not yet qualified to transport injured guests in a toboggan. This is only done by “Alpine Ski Patrollers”.

To qualify, candidates  will enter the second stage of training which consists of spending time on the hill with fellow Patroller Instructors and Professional Ski Instructors in our Ski and Toboggan course.

Held on Saturday mornings, the candidate will work with these instructors to improve their ski/snowboarding abilities. Once the basics are improved, the candidate will then be introduced to toboggan handling. There is a ski and toboggan training final, where, upon completion, the candidate will be considered an “Alpine Ski Patroller”.

Granite Peak Ski Patrol suggests a minimum of 100 hours per season. Upon completion, the Patroller is eligible for additional benefits for hours volunteered in excess of the minimum.

As with any volunteer organization, there are costs and responsibilities connected with becoming a patroller. More of this information will be provided to you during the oral interview/information session.
